Postoperative changes in body composition after pancreaticoduodenectomy using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis
Gastroenterology | ECW/TBW, SMM, BFM, VFA | Mikamori M et al. | 2015 | Japan | Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery
Background Nutritional status is one of the most important clinical determinants of outcome after surgery. The aim of this study was to compare changes in the body composition of patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), distal gastrectomy (DG), or total gastrectomy (TG). Methods The parameters of body composition were measured using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis with an inBody 720 (Biospace Inc. Tokyo. Japan) in 60 patients who had undergone PD (n= 18), DG (n= 30), or TG (n= 12). None of …
Determination of the stress factor calculated from the changes in the measured resting energy expenditure with indirect calorim
Gastroenterology | BW, FFM | Seon Hyeong Kim, et al. | 2017 | Korea | Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Purpose To predict the energy expenditure using the stress factor representing the ratio of the metabolic variation between pre-operation and post-operation in a pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Methods This was a prospective study conducted on 17 patients (11 males and 6 females) who underwent PD at Chonbuk National University Hospital between March 2010 and October 2011. The rest energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetry 1 day before and 3 days after surgery. The height, weight …
Body composition assessment of Crohn's outpatients and comparison with gender-and age-specific multiple matched control pairs
Gastroenterology | Body composition | A Molnár et al. | 2017 | Hungary | Clinical Nutrition
Results: Using body mass index (BMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) as the markers of nutritional status, we found low BMI for 21% of the patients and low FFMI for 30% of them. Low BMI values were not gender specific, but substantially more females had low FFMI values. Low BMI was diagnosed in the patients' vs the control group for 21 vs 4% for men and 21 vs 2% for women; whereas low FFMI was diagnosed for 25 vs 5% for men and 36 vs 14% for women. Significant differences were found between patients' and control groups …
Role of Human Body Composition Analysis and Malnutrition Risk Questionnaire in the Assessment of Nutritional Status of Patients
Gastroenterology | SMI, FFMI, BFM, PBF, BCM, VFA | Kurban et al. | 2020 | China | Front. Med
Objective: This study was to investigate the role and necessity of human body composition analysis in assessing the nutritional status of initially diagnosed Crohn's disease (CD) patients. Methods: 47 initially diagnosed CD patients were recruited. The skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI), body fat mass (BFM), body fat percent (BFP), visceral fat area (VFA) and body cell mass (BCM) were determined with Biospace Inbody S10 composition analyzer. Results: In 47 patients with initially diagnosed CD, SMI could …
A link between nutritional and growth states in pediatric patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders
Gastroenterology | PBF | Pawłowska, Umławska, and Iwan´czak | 2018 | Poland | THE JOURNAL OF PEDIATRICS
Objective To investigate nutritional status and growth status of pediatric patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and to examine the relationship between nutritional status and linear growth in these children. Study design In total, 102 pediatric patients diagnosed with functional constipation (FC), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or functional abdominal pain (FAP) in years 2013-2015 were subjected to anthropometric measurements. Anthropometry comprised body height, leg and trunk lengths, body weight …
Relationships Among Circulating TNF-α, Skeletal Muscle and Peripheral CD8+ T Cells During Cachexia in Gastric Cancer
Gastroenterology | SMM, SMI, BFM | Zhao et al. | 2020 | China | Research square
Background: Cancer-associated cachexia is characterized by ongoing loss of skeletal muscle and has a high incidence in gastric cancer. Although studies have focused on the effect of in ammatory cytokines on skeletal muscle loss, it is not clear whether in ammatory cytokines affect other physiological functions, particularly immunity in gastric cancer. Thus, we aim to investigate the relationships between circulating TNF-α, skeletal muscle and peripheral immune status in gastric cancer. Methods: Totally 392 gastric cancer patients in …
Insulin-like growth factor-1 as a nutritional monitoring factor in patients with chronic intestinal failure
Gastroenterology | FFM, SMM, Protein | Wang et al. | 2019 | China | Clinical Nutrition
Background & aims Nutritional monitoring plays an important role in optimizing nutritional support in patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF) receiving long-term supplementation. Unlike initial nutritional assessment, however, there are no recommended guidelines for establishing a nutritional monitoring index. This study is to evaluate the suitability of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) as a nutritional monitoring factor in CIF patients. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the correlation between serum nutritional indicators, including IGF …
Case report of an adult patient who underwent a serial transverse enteroplasty procedure for short bowel syndrome following an
Gastroenterology | SMM, PBF, VFA, Protein, Mineral, BMR, TBW/FFM, Phase Angle | Sang-Yong Son, et al. | 2018 | Korea | Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Since its introduction as an alternative intestinal lengthening technique, the serial transverse enteroplasty (STEP) procedure has been used increasingly as the surgical treatment of choice for children with short bowel syndrome (SBS). On the other hand, there are few report of its efficacy in adults with SBS, particularly those who have previously undergone a gastrectomy. This case report describes a 34-year-old woman with a short bowel after an esophagectomy and total gastrectomy due to lye ingestion followed by an extensive …
