A pilot study of the effect of phospholipid curcumin on serum metabolomic profile in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver di
Hepatology | BW, FFM | S Chashmniam et al. | 2019 | Iran | European Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Results Compared with the placebo, supplementing phospholipid curcumin resulted in significant decreases in serum including 3-methyl-2-oxovaleric acid, 3-hydroxyisobutyrate, kynurenine, succinate, citrate, α-ketoglutarate, methylamine, trimethylamine, hippurate, indoxyl sulfate, chenodeoxycholic acid, taurocholic acid, and lithocholic acid. This profile of metabolic biomarkers could distinguish effectively NAFLD subjects who were treated with curcumin and placebo groups, achieving value of 0.99 for an area under receiver operating …
Sarcopenia assessed using bioimpedance analysis is associated independently with significant liver fibrosis in patients with ch
Hepatology | ASMM, SMI | Kim et al. | 2019 | Korea | European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology
Aim Sarcopenia is common in patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. We investigated the correlation between sarcopenia and other clinical variables, in particular, significant liver fibrosis in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLDs).
Obesity and Risk of NAFLD: A Comparison of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis and Conventional Derived Anthropometric Measures
Hepatology | BFM, PBF | Maya Balakrishnan et al. | 2017 | USA | Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Methods This study was nested within the Houston Barrett's Esophagus study, conducted in Michael E DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and previously described in detail (7). We included adults who had undergone BIA as part of the study, had abdominal imaging (CT, MRI, or ultrasound) within 6 months of enrollment, and no reported viral hepatitis or excessive alcohol use (> 7 and> 14 beverages/week respectively in women and men). NAFLD was determined based on imaging detected hepatic steatosis.
Association of low skeletal muscle mass with advanced liver fibrosis in patients with non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease
Hepatology | Segmental FFM | Kang MK | 2019 | Korea | Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Abstract Background and Aim Although low skeletal muscle mass (LSMM) is known to increase the risk of non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), limited reports have described the relationship between LSMM and advanced fibrosis. Here, we investigated the association between LSMM and advanced liver fibrosis in NAFLD patients. Methods Fatty liver was diagnosed using ultrasound, and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis. LSMM was defined in two ways …
Effects of garlic powder supplementation on insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and body composition in patients with non-alc
Hepatology | PBF, SMM | Sangouni et al. | 2020 | Iran | Complementary Therapies in Medicine
Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. Insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and obesity are major contributors to NAFLD pathogenesis. The effects of garlic powder supplementation on these risk factors in patients with NAFLD was investigated. Methods In this 12-wk, randomized controlled clinical trial, ninety patients with NAFLD were randomly assigned to two groups. The treatment group received four tablets of garlic (each coated tablet contained 400 mg garlic powder) …
A pilot study of the effect of curcumin on epigenetic changes and DNA damage among patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver dise
Hepatology | WHR, PBF, FFM | Hariri et al. | 2020 | Iran | Complementary Therapies in Medicine
Background The enhancement of oxidative stress in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients may cause mutation in DNA by deamination of cytosine to 5-hydroxyuracil or uracil. This study aimed to discover the effects of curcumin on NAFLD progress, DNA damage caused by oxidative stress, and promoter methylation of mismatch repair enzymes. Material and methods in this study, 54 NAFLD patients were randomly devided into two groups, according to a double blind parallel design either phytosomal curcumin (250 …
Hypocaloric high-protein diet improves clinical and biochemical markers in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFL
