Validity of quantitative ultrasound and bioelectrical impedance analysis for measuring bone density and body composition in chi
Principle/Accuracy | FFM, BFM, PBF | Delshad et al. | 2020 | New Zealand | European Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Results In 124 healthy children, positive correlations between QUS SI and DXA (BMC and BMD) were observed (range= 0.30–0.45, P< 0.01). Results from Lin's CCC test showed almost perfect correlations between BIA and DXA fat free mass (0.96), fat mass (0.92), and substantial correlation for percentage of fat mass (0.75)(P< 0.05). Conclusion Although BIA results were not as accurate as DXA and DXA remains the gold standard method for clinical assessment, BIA can be an alternative method for investigating body composition among …
Accuracy augmentation of body composition measurement by bioelectrical impedance analyzer in elderly population
Principle/Accuracy | BFM, SLM | Fang et al. | 2020 | Taiwan | Medicine
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is currently the most commonly used method in clinical practice to measure body composition. However, the bioelectrical impedance analyzer is not designed according to different countries, races, and elderly populations. Because different races may have different body compositions, a prediction model for the elderly population in Taiwan should be developed to avoid population bias, thereby improving the accuracy of community evaluation surveys.
Concordance among bioelectrical impedance analysis measures of percent body fat in athletic young adults
Principle/Accuracy | PBF | BM Carrion et al. | 2019 | USA | International Journal of Exercise Science
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the agreement among three bioelectrical impedance analysis devices (BIA) in athletic young adults. Fifty-one participants (26 men and 25 women) were assessed for percent body fat (PBF) using an arm-to-arm bipolar single-frequency device (ABIA), a leg-to-leg single-frequency device (LBIA), and an octopolar multi-frequency BIA device (MFBIA). PBF was measured with the three devices in a randomized, counterbalanced order. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant (p< …

Assessment of body composition in peritoneal dialysis patients using bioelectrical impedance and dual-energy x-ray absorptiomet
Principle/Accuracy | FFM | Furstenberg A and Davenport A | 2011 | UK | American Journal of Nephrology
Introduction: Protein energy wasting is closely related to increased morbidity and mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Simple reliable and easily available methods of determining nutritional status and recognition of short-term changes in body composition are therefore important for clinical practice. Methods: We compared whole-body and segmental composition using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MF-BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in 104 stable PD patients. Results: Assessment of …
A review of body composition measurements by foot-to-foot and eight-electrodes impedance meters: effect of body scale and elect
Principle/Accuracy | | Michel Y Jaffrin, Sana Bousbiat | 2018 | France | -
We have reviewed the relevant literature concerning fat-free-mass (FFM) measurements by foot-to-foot impedance meters (FFI) and eight-electrode devices by adding four electrodes for the hands. FFI measures the lower body resistance R between heels and calculate FFM with an equation including R, height H, weight W and age by comparison with FFM measured by Dual X-Ray. Fat mass (FM) is equal to the difference between W and FFM. This review discussed results from ten articles on FFI and eight on eight-electrode impedance …
Comparison of segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis with dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry for the assessmen
Principle/Accuracy | FFM, SLM, BFM | Kim M et al. | 2014 | Japan | Geriatrics & Gerontology International
Aim The purpose of the present study was to examine the agreement of segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (SMF‐BIA) for the assessment of whole‐body and appendicular fat mass (FM) and lean soft tissue mass (LSTM) compared with dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) in a community‐dwelling J apanese older population. Methods The study population included 551 community‐dwelling J apanese older adults (241 men and 310 women) aged between 65 and 87 years. Agreement between SMF‐BIA …

Accuracy of direct segmental multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis in the assessment of total body and segmental body compositi
Principle/Accuracy | FFM, BFM, WHR | Carolina H.Y. Ling | 2011 | Netherlands | Clinical Nutrition
Background & aims Body composition measurement is a valuable tool for assessing nutritional status and physical fitness in a variety of clinical settings. Although bioimpedance analysis (BIA) can easily assess body composition, its accuracy remains unclear. We examined the accuracy of direct segmental multi-frequency BIA technique (DSM-BIA) in assessing different body composition parameters, using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) as a reference standard. Methods A total of 484 middle-aged participants from the …
